Pros

  • Great physics system
  • Virtually no rules
  • Amazing number of variables with which to play

Cons

  • No plot or guidance
  • No goals
  • Might be a bit complex for younger players

Universe Sandbox 2 is a space simulator that allows players to alter physics, arrange the planets and stars, and generally, play around with the physical properties of the universe. It is the sequel to the well-regarded Universe Sandbox, and it's a useful tool for understanding how physics work in space.

If you're looking for a game, you're probably not looking for Universe Sandbox 2. There's nothing included in this version that rises to the level of being a true game. For instance, there's no plot to speak of, nor are there any real objectives. Instead, the game is a true sandbox, giving players access to a number of tools. Even when compared to many other sandbox games, this game is wide open—no one will tell you what to do, but there are few limits to what you can accomplish.

This is not to say that Universe Sandbox 2 isn't fun, though. If your idea of a good time is building model solar systems or figuring out what would happen if you put a black hole in the middle of the sun, you'll get hours of enjoyment from this game. It's also incredibly useful for those who want a basic understanding of astrophysics. While the engine isn't 100% accurate in this version, it's a fantastic tool for students who want to learn more about space.

Universe Sandbox 2 is a great sandbox experience. If you're willing to play around with a toolset that won't hold your hand, you can have a good time. The more you're willing to learn, the more you'll be able to do in this interesting program.
